Week of September 30th

Good Evening Everyone!

This week will be a unconventional week. We will have "normal" days on Monday and Tuesday. I will be out of the building on Wednesday, and on Thursday, we will have our Academic Olympics and Rider Pride Parties.

This week in ELA we will be working on Reading Literature Standard 1. This standard states that students will ask and answer such questions as who, what, when, where, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. We will be continuing our study with the texts The Relatives Came and When I Was Young in the Mountains both by Cynthia Rylant. Cynthia Rylant is also the author of Henry and Mudge which we read in class.

We have also been discussing the following reading strategies:
  • Visualization-creating mental pictures in your head as you read
  • Prediction- What clues does the story give you? What do I know already that will help? What will happen next?
  • Monitoring- Stopping throughout the story to make sure that you are understanding what you read
  • Summarizing-Giving a short and sweet synopsis of the story
  • Inferring- Using what you know plus what the author says to create a deeper understanding.
These strategies will spiral throughout the year.

In Math, we will be finishing our beginning of the year unit on place value and number sense. Instruction will focus on comparing two digit numbers using place value to justify responses. After this unit, students should be able to identify even and odd numbers, skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, write numbers in standard, expanded, written, and base ten form, and compare numbers using place value understanding.

Here is a great game for comparing numbers: Comparing Numbers Fruit Shoot

Students should be able to explain their comparisons using the following language: 37 is greater than 16 because 37 has three tens while 16 only has one ten.

On Thursday, we will have our Academic Olympics from 9:00 to 11:00 and our Rider Pride Parties will be held from 1:30-2:30. All are invited to attend! In order to be mindful of allergies I will be providing all refreshments for our party.

Please have a wonderful week! Thank you again for sharing your wonderful children with me!
