This was a guided practice experience. The full practice task can be found at here.

The Smarter Balanced performance task allowed students to use two sources of information and collaborate to write a museum article about animal defenses. They took notes after viewing/ reading each source.

Source #1: animal defenses video

Source #2: Animal Roll Ups article

Using knowledge from these two sources, students answered questions. Here is an example of one response they constructed.

After answering questions, students created a museum display article. This article was guided by me, but almost fully constructed by the students.

They did an excellent job!

I am so happy to be back! I apologize that it has taken me so long. Now that we are finally back in the swing of things, I hope that I can update this site often to include interesting links and reads to keep you updated about what is happening in our classroom and tools to help you as a parent. Today's link is from a teacher's blog about Common Core Math.

I can tell you, as with all new trends in education, you must analyze it and determine your opinion for yourself. I have seen amazing transformations for my students and myself because of this new way of thinking.

Please visit the following link for what I think is a GREAT perspective on Common Core Math:
There are many great resources and tutorials for teachers and parents on this site and you can sign up for FREE! Many of the resources posted are for third through fifth grade, however, they can be adapted for use in second (for example if the tutorial does place value to the ten thousands place, just focus on place value to the thousands place). Plus, it will help you understand the strategies that the Common Core is expecting out of your child. You can also help your child get a jump start for third grade this summer!
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. I love having the extra time to spend with my family and slow down from the go, go, go of being a teacher. As I was thinking of topics to include in my blog, I thought about how much attention I have given to math and how little I have given to ELA. One big push with the Common Core State Standards is the use of Text Dependent Questions when reading. Students should be able to respond to questions about what they read providing evidence to support their response. Jackson Consulting gives a checklist to determine if the questions we are asking children are text dependent.

-Are questions that can only be answered correctly by close reading of the text and demand careful attention to the text
-Require an understanding that extends beyond recalling facts
-Often require students to infer
-Do not depend on information from outside sources
-Provide access to increasing levels of complex text
-Call for careful and thoughtful teacher/adult preparation
-Require time for students to process

As always when you focus on comprehension at home please practice using complete sentences!
Here is a short video explanation from YouTube. We DO NOT show borrowing with the algorithm like they show, however, it is a good visual to show you how our "old school" subtraction and the way students learn subtraction today are related. Please let me know if you have any questions.
I am trying out a new way to communicate with you through Educreations. I made a short video to explain addition word problems with missing addednds. Please pardon the end where I wrote "Walmarts" instead of Walmart. There was no way to edit the clip without completely redoing it (just proof to the kids that we all make mistakes)! I hope you find this video helpful.

What a great time for a "fresh start"! This week we will be starting the second marking period. Can you believe how quickly time goes by? It seems like just yesterday we were entering the classroom for the first time and getting to know one another. Anyways, we have great things planned for the second marking period. Here are our focus standards for the week:

CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1

CCSS.Math.Content.2.NBT.B.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

CCSS.Math.Content.2.NBT.B.6 Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.2 Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.2e Consult reference materials, including beginning dictionaries, as needed to check and correct spellings.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

As you can tell, we will be VERY busy!

The hardest part this week will be in math when we focus on placing an X as the unknown number in a word problem. I like to tell the children they are doing high school math because essentially, this is algebra. Practice at home with your child entering an X for the unknown and reasoning through math word problems, not just pulling out numbers.

In English Language Arts, we will be focusing on the characteristics of a tall tale...see if your child can name them all! The children really have fun with the exaggeration in tall tales and the humor associated with the exaggeration.

Please don't forget that there is a PTA Meeting on Wednesday in the Library at 6:00 PM and that we will have The Brain Show on Thursday. Please see the Allen Frear website for more details.

Have a great week! Miss Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00710190352114571939noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7322494796452822474.post-45759158884563057832013-10-21T03:44:00.004-07:002013-10-21T03:45:43.359-07:00Math Strategies to AddCommon Core requires students to understand place value addition before learning the procedural based carrying standard algorithm. Here is a short video that explain some of the methods we will be using in class. Please take note that we are currently only expected to add two digit numbers.

We discuss ten frames and tally marks as inefficient ways to solve math addition problems, but a strategy none the less. Here is a quick You Tube video explaining the use of ten frames and how you can help your child use ten frames in math! Enjoy!
This week will be a unconventional week. We will have "normal" days on Monday and Tuesday. I will be out of the building on Wednesday, and on Thursday, we will have our Academic Olympics and Rider Pride Parties.

This week in ELA we will be working on Reading Literature Standard 1. This standard states that students will ask and answer such questions as who, what, when, where, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. We will be continuing our study with the texts The Relatives Came and When I Was Young in the Mountains both by Cynthia Rylant. Cynthia Rylant is also the author of Henry and Mudge which we read in class.

We have also been discussing the following reading strategies:

Visualization-creating mental pictures in your head as you read

Prediction- What clues does the story give you? What do I know already that will help? What will happen next?

Monitoring- Stopping throughout the story to make sure that you are understanding what you read

Summarizing-Giving a short and sweet synopsis of the story

Inferring- Using what you know plus what the author says to create a deeper understanding.

These strategies will spiral throughout the year.

In Math, we will be finishing our beginning of the year unit on place value and number sense. Instruction will focus on comparing two digit numbers using place value to justify responses. After this unit, students should be able to identify even and odd numbers, skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, write numbers in standard, expanded, written, and base ten form, and compare numbers using place value understanding.

Here is a great game for comparing numbers: Comparing Numbers Fruit Shoot

Students should be able to explain their comparisons using the following language: 37 is greater than 16 because 37 has three tens while 16 only has one ten.

On Thursday, we will have our Academic Olympics from 9:00 to 11:00 and our Rider Pride Parties will be held from 1:30-2:30. All are invited to attend! In order to be mindful of allergies I will be providing all refreshments for our party.

Please have a wonderful week! Thank you again for sharing your wonderful children with me!
I can't believe that we are already going into our fourth week of school. We are really beginning to settle into our weekly routines and becoming more familiar with our school days.

In reading we will be focusing on Retelling vs. Summarizing. Retelling is when a student reads a passage or a book and tells all the details that they remember. When we retell, we use sequencing words like first, second, next, then, last. Summarizing is a shorter version of a retell that captures just the main idea and points of a passage or story. To summarize, we are using a beginning, middle, end chart. These two strategies are very important in helping us comprehend what we read.

In writing we will finish our study of capital letters and begin working on adjectives. Here are some adjective games:
http://www.ezschool.com/Games/Adjectives.html
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/grammar/adjectives.htm

In math we will conclude our study of skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Our skip counting assessment will take place on Wednesday. Students should be able to skip count from any number by these values. Fruit Shoot provide practice with this skill: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/earlymath/Fruit_shoot_SkipCount.htm.

We will continue math later in the week by studying how to represent numbers using base ten pieces, written form, and expanded form. More information to come about that on a later post.

I hope you all have a great week! I know we will!Miss Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00710190352114571939noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7322494796452822474.post-11101868522447425592013-09-09T02:36:00.001-07:002013-09-09T02:36:36.440-07:00DIBELSAs mentioned earlier, we began DIBELS last week...so what is DIBELS testing? Here is the explanation from the test makers themselves:

What are DIBELS? Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of assessments used for universal screening and progress monitoring in grades K-6. They are standardized, efficient and extensively researched.

What do DIBELS do? They help educators identify students who may need additional literacy instruction in order to become proficient readers. DIBELS can be an integral part of most RTI (Response to Intervention) programs.

In short, the second grade DIBELS test measures reading rate, accuracy, and retell. Students are given a short passage and are asked to read for one minute. The teacher listens carefully and marks mistakes as well as where the student finishes. After the student is done reading, they retell what they remember. This is completed a total of three times and the median score is taken.

DIBELS scores will allow classroom instruction to be individualized and based on student needs. The test is given three times a year for students who meet the established benchmark. If students have fallen below the benchmark, they will be DIBELed on a weekly or every other week schedule.

I will share more about DIBELS testing during Parent Information Night on Tuesday. If you would like more information on your child's beginning of the year DIBELS score, please feel free to schedule a conference.
